Position Overview:
DR Reed & Associates Inc (REED) is re-establishing a Bay-Delta flow and water quality monitoring network. This entry-level, hybrid position is field-focused. When not in the field, responsibilities include remote data processing, QA/QC, documentation, and record maintenance. Field duties involve assisting with the construction, operation, and maintenance of monitoring stations, conducting boat-based measurements in tidal channels, servicing water quality sensors, and maintaining telemetry and power systems.

Key Responsibilities:
- Build, service, and troubleshoot hydrologic monitoring stations
- Perform sonde maintenance and calibration; verify and document site monitor data using Aquarius
- Conduct ADCP discharge measurements during appropriate tidal windows
- Maintain telemetry systems, including deploying logger scripts and programs
- Clean and maintain monitoring stations
- Follow safe electrical practices for 12/24 VDC systems; replace components as needed
- Ensure vehicles, boats, and trailers are inspection-ready; perform minor maintenance
- Communicate access, schedules, and outages promptly with the team.
- Complete data processing and record analysis using Aquarius Time Series.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Entry-level; prior field or technical experience is helpful but not required
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience considered
- Proficiency with email, file management, spreadsheets, and mobile data collection
- Comfortable operating small boats; valid driver’s license and insurability
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in various weather conditions
- Competence with hand tools, multimeters, GPS/mobile apps, and rigging
- Strong documentation skills and ability to follow checklists and SOPs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with USGS surface-water techniques and methods
- Construction background; ability to read schematics and pinouts
- Mechanical aptitude for diagnosing and repairing field equipment
- Understanding of basic electricity and safe DC practices
- Year-round boating experience in variable conditions
- Familiarity with ADCP/ADVMs, sondes, sensors, and related data systems
- Experience with Campbell CR6/LoggerNet, cellular telemetry, and basic scripting
- Knowledge of Aquarius, SharePoint, and basic data visualization tools
Certifications & Training:
- Internal boat operator evaluation and ADCP deckhand competencies (within 60 days of hire)
- Assigned safety training (ongoing)
- ADCP training (within 60 days of hire)
- Water quality sonde service (within 60 days of hire)
Physical & Environmental Conditions:
- Frequent exposure to challenging environmental field conditions
- Repetitive lifting, kneeling, climbing, and extended standing
Success Metrics for Hydrologist I (First 6 Months):
- Demonstrated proficiency with ADCPs and discharge measurements
- Ability to independently service water quality monitors
- Active participation in team meetings, adherence to safety, and punctuality
Compensation & Benefits:
- Compensation: $70,000-135,000/year - Hydrographer series; overtime-eligible.
